My ex wanted to do couples therapy with his therapist while he was cheating on me for 4 years. I had no idea and he never disclosed to his therapist. He would have gaslight me in a therapist’s presence while living a double life that we did not know about.

I think it is so powerful how you are balancing honesty and accountability with warmth. Therapy requires vulnerability, but some people, even under the most ideal circumstances, can’t get there (yet). I think an honest take like this is needed more in couples’ counselling

I felt like this in marriage counselling. my ex-husband revealed a bunch of things he had done and much of it felt like she was placating his feelings so he would reveal things. but it also then meant I couldn't express mine for the same reason. it was an unevenness and it didn't help, just made me resent him more. he also found tools to manipulate. horrible stuff.

I think that for example a partner who really is insecure ex "why do you have female/male friends i am not enough? Is obvious you cheating on me" i think therapy could be helpful for them, not a professional tho.
