GilgitBaltistan The recent flood situation has once again proven that whether the government or the administration is making any real preparations for early warning system, disaster mitigation and effective planning for the affected. The ground truth shows that our polices are non-existent. This year we saw that the speed of melting of glaciers was increasing more than before. Experts are also alarmed that in five years the rapid melting of glaciers will further progress, resulting in floods, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and other natural disasters. In such situations, comprehensive planning and timely measures are indispensable. The question is, what is the government’s plan? If there is any effective plan, then bring it before the public. We need to work seriously on the system of attack, early warning systems, training of local population and rescue operations keeping in mind the future. Sadly, over the past twenty years, government priorities have largely been limited to political issues and power struggles, while the region continues to advance in the face of the challenges it faces. The result is that today Gilgit-Baltistan is no longer as safe as it was before natural disasters. It is time to adopt a long-term, scientific and effective strategy to ensure that generations can move forward safely.
