Realistically, the UK had no chance of ever retaining India in its empire long term, ESPECIALLY after two world wars. Lots of Indians lives were sacrificed in those wars, not to mention the wealth of the subcontinent largely being extracted for the princes and Britain. Not to mention the fact that ever since the beginning of British rule, there has always been some sentiment of independence. The population difference between the UK and India is and was also immense, and once the UK lost its technological/material advantage they didn’t have the means to retain the Raj.

Made India objectively worse, bringing a couple trains means nothing when you destroy critical industries and extract vast amounts of wealth, all while stoking ethnic tensions by forcing together regions that have been warring since the Brits were in caves.
