Poop doesn’t inherently smell bad our brains interpret its smell as unpleasant because it can contain harmful bacteria and other potentially dangerous compounds. In a way, our sense of smell acts as a warning system to protect us from things that could harm us. If the smell weren’t associated with any health risk, our brains might not perceive it as disgusting. Flies, for example, are attracted to the smell because it signals food and a suitable place to reproduce. So, in a sense, it’s not just the smell itself it’s how our brains interpret that smell based on its potential danger.
