i was trying to explain to my undiagnosed autistic friend about stimming orcas he called it skimming and he was the headmaster of a special needs school back in the day and Is highly intelligent. so it just goes to show the progress that has been made in this area and there is a lot more to come., there is still so much hidden with this condition

How do we manage classes of 30 children if 15 of them have different and very specific needs - one teacher can’t manage it all or be criticised if they can’t get the support required.

Absolutely this!!!! My two non verbal teenagers were diagnosed at two, low functioning, need 24 hour supervision, are fighting for services with people who attend mainstream and will live independently. We need clearer definitions.

Actually, the diagnostic criteria is very very specific, with the DSM5 having levels and being shaped by autistic academics. The spectrum has not become broader, we’re just catching more people in the net because we understand more. People have an issue with offering more support to more people, even though it allows for a better functioning society.

The term “High functioning” shouldn’t be used. It should be “high masking”

I've got a very high needs/non verbal son. What's interesting to me, is that people keep trying to claim this is some sort of new fandangle thing. However, after having my son and watching his struggles, it's made me realise I can think back to my days in school and list about ten other students that I'd almost guarantee were on the spectrum. We just didn't know what is was back then, so they were classed as "odd" or "slow". It's really opened my eyes to just how prevalent this has always been.
