I’m seeing lots of these Christmas seasoning mixes being sold to us at the moment and they are one of the biggest supermarket gimmicks this time of year! A tiny 30-gram sachet for €1 might seem handy, but when you look at what you’re actually buying, it’s mostly sugar, maltodextrin (another form of sugar), and salt. That’s the bulk of the “Red Cabbage Seasoning Mix” in Tesco — plus flavour enhancers and stabilisers. Completely unnecessary when all we’re looking for is some nice Christmas spices! It’s the definition of an ultra-processed, low-quality product being pushed as festive and “helpful.” You would get far better flavour — and save money — by buying some Christmassy spices separately and then they’ll keep in the cupboard for more cooking/baking at other times! Things like ginger, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon will give gorgeous Christmassy flavour, and you avoid all the unnecessary additives and Christmas marketing nonsense. These mixes are just charging people for sugar, salt, and additives with a festive label slapped on the front. You absolutely do not need them to make gorgeous Christmas veg.
