Mav :
notice how big man isn't there? its because he wouldn't be a "cute little ray", he would be a "cute medium-sized ray", therefore breaking the trend

Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds | Released: February 20, 1985 (US), April 8, 1985 (UK) | Album: The Breakfast Club Soundtrack | Recorded: July 1984, London | number 1 Billboard Hot 100 (May 18, 1985), number 1 Canada, number 1 Netherlands, number 7 UK | The song the band turned down five times. The fist in the air. The diamond earring. The question that never gets answered. This is the story of the song that almost wasn't. THE SONG THEY DIDN'T WANT: Keith Forsey wrote "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for The Breakfast Club with Simple Minds' Jim Kerr in mind. The band turned it down. Repeatedly. "We knocked it back about five or six times," Kerr later admitted . Forsey offered the song to Bryan Ferry (passed), Billy Idol (passed), and Cy Curnin of The Fixx (passed) . The song had no home. THE BREAKTHROUGH: Jim Kerr's wife at the time — Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders — told him to stop being a snob and record the damn song . Forsey flew to London, played it one more time, and the band finally agreed. They recorded it in a single afternoon in a north London studio — three hours, one take on the vocals, and they promptly forgot about it . THE ACCIDENTAL OUTRO: The iconic "la la la la la" outro was never supposed to be there. "I added it because I didn't have any lyrics. I said I'd write some," Kerr explained. "But Keith said: 'Over my dead body. We're keeping that'" . THE NUMBERS: · number 1 Billboard Hot 100 — one week (May 18, 1985) · number 1 Canada RPM Top Singles · number 1 Netherlands Top 40 · number 7 UK Singles Chart · number 4 Germany, number 8 Switzerland, number 3 New Zealand · The band's ONLY number 1 in the US THE SCENE: The song plays during the opening and closing credits of John Hughes' The Breakfast Club. The final shot — Judd Nelson's John Bender walking across the football field, fist raised, freeze-framed against the golden sky — became one of the most iconic images in 1980s cinema. "It's a rare moment of victory for a character who probably won't get too many of those," wrote Stereogum. "But under everything, we can hear doubt already setting in" . THE MEANING: The song is not a celebration. It is a question. "Slow chains may pull us apart when our life gets into your heart, baby." The fist in the air is not triumph. It is hope — and fear. Will they still be friends on Monday morning? Will anyone remember? The movie freezes before the answer comes. That is why the song still hits. We are all still waiting. THE LEGACY: The song was never included on a Simple Minds studio album — only on the soundtrack and later compilations . It became their biggest hit, launched them into the US market, and led to them playing Live Aid in 1985 . It has been featured in Pitch Perfect (2012), Easy A (2010), and sampled by Nicki Minaj on "Blazin'" featuring Kanye West . Billy Idol finally recorded his own cover in 2001 — and it is, by all accounts, "straight trash" . WHAT JIM KERR SAID: "It's not my favorite Minds track either. But I am eternally grateful to be associated with a record that has given so much pleasure to so many. Plus, it is always a blast to perform. I also like the notion of having sung on a record that once sat at the number 1 position on the American Billboard Charts" . Follow @CommonChordUSA for the moments when music becomes memory.
