@rickyylaurenn: This is an example of what victims go through as we blindly navigate the terrain of the legal system post-abuse. I have countless stories from the aftermath of my abuse of being let down, taken advantage of, villainized, and mistreated by police, the courts, my abuser, and the very attorneys meant to protect me. The first attorney I hired took advantage of me while being completely inappropriate: * She described a sexual assault I had disclosed to her using the language “finger banged” in front of a room full of people. * She told me I was “too skinny” and needed “meat on my bones” before going to court. * She ordered me to send her photos of my dinner. * She told me to trim my toenails. * She mandated that as a condition of representing me, I had to see a therapist of her choice, paid for out of my legal retainer, and that she would have full access to everything disclosed in those sessions. * Months later, her “tech guy” added me on Snapchat, asked where I lived, and invited me over to do cocaine. And then she made it a nightmare for me to fire her - all while wasting weeks of my time, financially draining me and taking advantage of me and my situation, and adding stress to my plate during a DIRE time of my life. I share this to shine a light on the systemic exploitation victims face after surviving abuse, BUT if you are currently stuck in an abusive situation, please do not let this discourage you. I would walk through this legal nightmare a million times over if it meant getting out. Freedom is worth every single hurdle, and you can do it. It is wrong that victims have to navigate a broken system just to find safety, but the other side - a life of peace, freedom, and joy - is real and waiting for you. Fight for your future self.
