A “ruthless act of violence”. Six people have been handed down the largest jail term for murder ever seen in Wales, having been sentenced to a minimum of 157 years and 146 days. On 9 March 2025 police were called to an address at Llys Illtyd, Talbot Green, where 40-year-old Joanne Penney was seriously injured, having been shot to the chest. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she died at the scene. South Wales Police later determined that two cars – a Nissan Note and a Volvo XC40 – travelled from the Leicester area sometime after 10.30am on March 9, into South Wales before leaving shortly after the incident took place. The vehicles were linked to an organised crime group that were dealing drugs in the Talbot Green area. Joanne Penney’s death was a result of a “drugs feud” between organised crime groups from Leicester and South Wales, police said. A dozen people were convicted in connection with the death, six for murder. On Wednesday, Marcus Huntley, 21, was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 30 years and 146 days. Renaldo Baptiste, 39, also got life, with a minimum term of 42 years. Kistina Ginova, 23, got life, with a minimum term of 12 years and 10 months. Melissa Quailey-Dashper, 40, got life with a minimum of 14 years and 22 months. Jordan Mills-Smith, 33, life with a minimum term of 27 years and Joshua Godron, 27, life, with a minimum of 32 years. Miss Penney’s family released a statement after the sentencing. It reads:

He added that the case” lays bare the devastating consequences of organised crime. Those responsible showed a complete disregard for human life and for the safety of our communities.
