well done! this is to the haters: that same concept is widely used in big scale hydro power plants in Europe. pumping water up while excess power is in the grid. release and convert it when needed. efficiency's at about 90% total which is good enough for the case.

For all the people comparing the efficiency to purchasable batteries, please consider (just for the sake of curiosity) that while those batteries may be relatively cheap to buy for high storage capacity, they are very resource intensive. You're looking at rare minerals that need to be mined and shipped half way around the world to be made into batteries (possibly by machine factories running on potentially dirty power or by underpaid humans), to then be shipped halfway around the world again for consumers. Yeah, sure, that works out financially cheap. I'm not saying don't buy or use them, lord knows I have loads of batteries and a smartphone etc. But by comparing those batteries to this by solely comparing cost and electricity storage, you may, in fact, be missing some of the virtues of this

all the people speaking about the limitations as if fossil fuels didn't need 200 years or refinement to get to the efficiency level we currently have we now have the tech to expedite that progress massively but the economic incentive of capital prevents research and development in these fields

not a closed system and not truly renewable. it takes solar input which means it's not closed, and solar panels wear out and are rather destructive to produce. I'm all for green energy but people lying about it is why it's so hard to get it more mainstream.
