Day 1 of my 30-day civil engineering internship! We kicked off the day getting hands-on with site cleanup. Clearing standing rain water off the slab was priority number one before organizing formwork materials. It was a tough first day, but seeing the structural progress makes it all worth it. There’s something I’ve been thinking about lately. If there’s a shortage of skilled plumbers in Ontario, why are so many companies still competing to be the cheapest? Homeowners often compare the hourly rate, but running a legitimate plumbing business is much more than paying a plumber’s wage. There’s licensing, insurance, WSIB, vehicles, fuel, tools, inventory, office staff, software, training, warranty work, taxes, and everything else it takes to answer the phone and stand behind the work. This isn’t about saying plumbers should charge more. It’s about asking where the balance is between fair pricing for customers and building a business that’s still around years later to honour its warranty. I’m genuinely curious to hear both sides. If you’re a plumber or another trades business owner, what’s the biggest cost people don’t realize you carry? If you’re a homeowner, what makes you feel a plumbing quote is fair? Let’s have a respectful discussion. What rates have you seen? Serving homeowners and businesses across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and the Tri-Cities.
