Oh, please! There are countries that don’t do tipping because the service staff is paid properly. Why is it our job to pay their wage? Isn’t that the job of a business?! If we continue to tip, we’re supporting the exploitation being done. So the problem will continue 🙄

As someone who used to be a waitress, I don’t agree. It is not the customers responsibility to pay their wages, but their employers. Tipping is being generous and an extra, it shouldn’t be their wage. We don’t tip other service jobs like nurses so why should we tip waiters

My mom always raised me saying “if you can’t tip, you can’t afford the service.” For me personally, even if the service is terrible I still tip. Just because someone wasn’t the best at their job doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a living wage … especially at my discretion.

I’ve worked in the service industry for over 20 years, including five years at McDonald’s, and I don’t agree that customers should be expected to pay employees’ wages through tips. Let’s stop gaslighting customers into believing that not tipping makes them selfish or unkind. Kindness is voluntary. If it’s expected or used to shame people, it isn’t kindness anymore. Under federal law, if a tipped employee doesn’t earn enough to reach the applicable minimum wage, the employer is legally required to make up the difference. Paying employees is the employer’s responsibility, not the customer’s. There are countless service workers who work just as hard as servers and aren’t expected to receive tips. If tipping should be expected for one service job, then it should be expected for all of them. Until it’s equal across the board, nobody should be shamed for choosing not to tip. The real conversation should be about employers paying fair wages, not convincing everyday people that they’re responsible for covering a business’s payroll.

People always say, “I’m not your employer, so I shouldn’t have to tip.”No, you’re not my employer—but you are the person I’m serving. You tell me what you want, I bring your food, refill your drinks, clean up after you, and make sure you’re taken care of. If someone cooked, cleaned, and served you in your own home, you’d pay them for their work. Serving tables is still a service. You don’t have to like the tipping system, but don’t act like we aren’t working for you while you’re sitting at our table.

Here’s my take on it. You sat down. You agreed on a certain pay system if that pay system no longer works for you, because your ability to provide for you and your family is solely based on people’s generosity and how often and how much they tip I wouldn’t want that unpredictability, but as adults, we chose to work in the food industry maybe instead of being disappointed and angry, and have your emotions yo-yoed find a new job that pays an hourly wage and a certain amount of hours, depending on what you need to survive and move on, but don’t dictate and tell people that they need to provide their hard earned money so that you can pay your bills
