@brotherdragon89: Do promises expire? Not in China. In 1947, during the War of Liberation, which was the last chapter in the Chinese civil war, a villager put his trust in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and their cause. Seeing the passing soldiers hungry, he offered them his grain. The revolutionaries never accepted freebies because they knew the dire situation of the farmers and workers who supported them. Every donation or purchase came with a loan voucher, that could be cashed in at a later time. The man, Ding Wanmin, never redeemed his. And for 79 years, the promise of paying back his contribution was not fulfilled, until June 2026. When the local government in Anhui Province received the voucher, they decided to honor the promise made before the foundation of the People's Republic of China and paid the Ding family over 10,000 dollars. For the grain, for the significance of this historical paper and more importantly, for the trust the grandfather had put in the cause that built this country. Countless people like Ding put their faith in the cause of the Chinese revolutionaries and helped in every possible. Their trust built this country, and China growing by leaps and bounds since 1949 is the ultimate proof. #chinatiktok #communism #forthepeople #governance #integritymatters

Leave it to those evil communists to give a farmer a receipt for the rations they bargained for and to insist on paying back the debt with interest.... Fucking evil, I tell ya

Mao and the founding communists believed that the support of the common people would unlock the path to power. They were right. This is how the Communists - outnumbered outgunned and outspent by the KMT - won China.

This would NEVER happen in the US. They’d just thank them for the donation and forget about him a week later

79 years? another example of communist inefficiency. In America we would just thank them for their patriotism and get their name wrong on Fox News.

PLA was much more disciplined and less corrupt than their enemies. Same reason why many in Afghanistan welcomed back the Taliban- they were less accommodating of the drug trade and bribery

Crazy to me that they held onto the voucher simply because knowing their family had provided help to the liberation meant more to them than whatever it would’ve been worth when cashed in 😭 I’m so jealous of china.

They still teach those strict ethics in the military, as the Three Rules and Eight Points of Attention. Basic stuff like no looting, no stealing, no raping, humane treatment of civilians and, like this case, providing fair payment for goods and services. Got them through civil war, fascist occupation, to international trade.

in contrast, when peasants and farmers asked for debt cancellation after the american revolution, they got crushed (Shays rebellion). This brought about the constitutional convention, which in turn produced the Constitution of the United States, because as James Madison said "we can't have too much democracy" (I paraphrase)

almost a ton of grain. Was he a landowner? I don't think he would survive Cultural Revolution if that was the case, being kulak and all. Also probably the real reason he hid it inside the wall.

I think the more incredible thing is that they could’ve taken it by force, but they did not. We know about what the British did that cost the famine in modern day India and Bangladesh so-called the Bengal famine.
