In today’s edition of Sounds From Afar, Felix Appiah reacts ahead of the NPP-led demonstration in Accra against what the opposition describes as a growing culture of silence under President John Dramani Mahama and the ruling NDC government. The protest follows rising concerns over the arrests and prosecution of TikTokers, political activists and other citizens for comments made about the President and government officials. Free-expression advocates have questioned whether Ghana’s false-news and offensive-conduct laws are being applied fairly, while government supporters insist that the arrests are legitimate enforcement against reckless or harmful speech. Felix Appiah accuses the Mahama administration of attempting to silence critics through the use of state institutions. He reminds President Mahama that, while the NDC was in opposition, pro-NDC commentators—including Kevin Taylor—frequently directed harsh criticism and insults at former President Nana Akufo-Addo without facing the same level of state action. Felix therefore calls on President Mahama to “taste the medicine” he and the NDC gave the previous NPP government by tolerating criticism, listening to the demonstrators and protecting freedom of expression.
