On March 2, 2021, a tragic accident occurred at the Public University of El Alto in El Alto. Hundreds of students had gathered inside the university’s financial sciences building for an assembly concerning administrative and student issues. As more people crowded into a fourth-floor corridor, conditions became increasingly dangerous. The narrow walkway became packed with students, leaving little room to move. During the gathering, tensions escalated and a confrontation broke out among some attendees, causing a sudden surge within the crowd. The pressure of dozens of people pushing against a metal safety railing proved too much for the structure to withstand. Part of the railing suddenly collapsed, creating a large opening along the edge of the corridor. Several students immediately lost their footing and fell from the fourth floor. In the chaos, some were pulled back to safety by classmates in desperate last-second rescue attempts. Others were unable to stop their fall and plunged approximately 50 feet to the courtyard below. Seven students, ranging in age from 20 to 27, lost their lives in the incident, while several others suffered severe injuries. The disaster shocked Bolivia and led to a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the gathering. Authorities examined the organization of the overcrowded assembly, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the events that led to the crowd surge and railing failure. The tragedy remains one of the deadliest university accidents in Bolivia’s recent history. It highlighted the dangers of overcrowding, inadequate crowd control, and structural vulnerabilities, demonstrating how a routine gathering can turn fatal in a matter of seconds.
