as a coloured they told me my afro is untidy and too long and i’m like the only coloured in my school that wears an afro and it’s unfair because in other schools there are coloureds with dyed hair and they don’t tell them to dye it black but i was told to dye my natural dark brown hair black

An assistant teacher told me when I was in high school that , most older female teachers think that if a learner gets braids ( especially girls ) they are trying to get attention from male teachers 😭 so they are trying to reduce the chances of student and teacher romantic relationships.......

Thoughts :
I'm the only Black girl in my class and for the longest time I felt like I stood out in ways I never wanted to One day I was told that because I didn't want to tie up my afro a teacher wanted to cut my hair I just stood there in shock I didn't know what to say or how to react All I could think was "What's so wrong with my hair" In that moment I felt so embarrassed and alone Being the only Black girl in my class already made me feel different sometimes and hearing those words made that feeling even worse It made me question something I had never thought twice about before my natural hair People might think it's "just hair" but it's so much more than that It's part of who I am part of my identity Being made to feel like it needed to be changed just to be accepted hurt more than I can explain I still think about that day No learner should ever be made to feel like their natural hair is something to be ashamed of I hope that by sharing my story people understand that words like these don't just disappear They stay with you
