Since most people are overly superstitious. The occult are largely spiritual practices that predate modern chemistry and psychology. Using rituals to manipulate matter (became chemistry) or other people (became psychological). Lots of newer occult stuff tends to incorporate lots of modern psychology in their practices too (such as many Thelemic and theistic satanist groups).
