In 2011 divers from the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences discovered that the egg doesn’t break or turn into a gooey mess. That’s because there’s so much pressure on the egg (2.8 times atmospheric pressure), that the surrounding water sort of acts like an eggshell to keep the yolk intact. Pressure increases the deeper you dive. At around the two mile mark (that’s where the titanic rests), the pressure is 2.8 tons per square inch. Jim Varnum, a curious ROV pilot from Seattle, Washington, decided to take the experiment one step further by attaching two eggs to his remotely operated underwater vehicle to see how far down he could make it before the eggs imploded. The first egg explodes at a depth of about 416 feet, while the second egg — which was presumably correctly sealed — stays fully intact. According to Varnum, the second egg made it to the deepest possible point of the dive at 17,060 feet without ever breaking.
