@childocdtherapist: OCD doesn’t always show up looking the same. Sometimes it’s contamination. Sometimes it’s checking. Sometimes it’s intrusive thoughts. And sometimes it convinces a child they somehow caused something bad to happen, even when there’s no logical connection. One of the reasons OCD can go unnoticed for so long is because it changes disguises. A child may conquer one OCD theme, only to have another one quietly take its place. If we only recognize the themes we’ve seen before, we can mistake a new theme for a new problem instead of seeing it for what it is: the same OCD wearing a different costume. The more familiar you become with the many ways OCD can show up, the easier it becomes to spot it before it pulls your child into another cycle. I always then get intrusive thoughts that the same thing is going to end up happening to me. then I feel selfish for making it about me even though I never voice these thoughts to anyone

My ocd looks similar. If my husband is stressed or upset I automatically take responsibility in my own head. If the kids are upset. I did that too. If they hear the word “no” and are upset I have destroyed their entire childhood. I have to talk myself down daily. If my kid forgot to do a chore and my husband gets onto them I get depressed because in my head it’s 100% my fault. Even if I can’t see why. It still feels like my fault.
