To be honest the ending was sweet and horrifying to me at the same time. Rick yelling “I’m your dad” is him basically finally accepting his role in Morty’s life and deep connection with him, it’s the closest to “I love you” we’ve got from him ig. But also Morty who accepts that his family is fucked in every dimension, and just learns to appreciate what he has (his toxic and dysfunctional family yes) is pretty depressing. And he comes to accept that his relationship with Rick despite all the toxicity and abuse is the deepest and most genuine bond he has. Like yes, Rick shouldn’t be his “dad” but Morty went to other dimensions, saw tons of version of his family and when he thought he finally found “the perfect” one, turns it was pretty fucking toxic and dysfunctional too. He just realised that despite all the toxicity, his family and relationship with Rick is the best he can get, cuz there’s no perfect option. Also the whole “you may be fighting but you’re the real deal” thing in ep 4 confirms this whole narrative. And ig there’s still place for hope cuz Rick is really CHANGING that is obvious. He’ll never be the perfect grandpa, but I believe he won’t stop trying to be a better person. So yea I personally found the ending scene cute in some way. Morty could stay with Sober Rick but chose to return to his Rick, really fucking far from perfect but still the one who cares about Morty more than anyone.

the final episode of season 9 was so bitter sweet. We saw Morty mourning the relationship with his family that he will never have, and saw Rick finally acknowledging that he is actually more of a father figure to Morty than Jerry is/has been. It's better sweet because while they aren't perfect, they have each other and accept each other's flaws. Yes they are toxic, but they still care about each other and need each other in their own way. This show never ceases to make me cry my eyes out

All I know about this show is from edits like this and what my wife tells me. As such, I know someone is a psychopath, the grandpa loses his wife in every timeline, the little kid loves his grandpa but it’s a toxic relationship but not as toxic as the one he has with his parents, grandad tells him he loves him only when he’s drunk, but he’s always drunk, and the little kid gets hurt by an alien in a bathroom so the granddad shoots the alien

it hurts so much! all Morty wanted was a "normal" family that cared about him and when he thought he found it, it was rotten in its own way. so he used that dimensions Rick to get home only for it to basically implode and go home somehow more traumatized. and Rick is the only one who seems to somewhat care and even then barely and I just... Morty deserves so much better but he's resigned to taking what he can get from Rick and ajajja
