I defended my team for 20 years only to realise that the moment they needed to defend me, no one was there. In fact they were standing with someone else. True rule is to care for yourself and forget about the team. Do not empower them beyond a certain point, because that will result in them challenging you. Corporate world is ruthless.

agreed but it's depend on the individual case. some time you gives lose hand people get benefits due to your polite behaviour they think that every time you will shadow their mistakes Infront of management and after repetitive behaviour you stop to defend them.

Nowadays, a team leader is often treated more like a dictator than a leader. Instead of guiding, supporting and developing the team they are expected to act as critics constantly identifying the teams flaws and mistakes reporting them to higher level and putting as much pressure on the team as possible.
