How do you repair a multi-million dollar satellite when every movement of your robotic arm pushes your own spacecraft in the opposite direction? 🛰️🤖 On July 21, 2026, the Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) carrying the DARPA-developed RSGS payload launched toward geosynchronous orbit. While the launch is a major milestone, the actual physics of orbital servicing remains unproven. Operating robotic arms in a free-flying microgravity environment requires solving a complex conservation of momentum puzzle: every movement of the 7-DoF manipulator arms rotates the host spacecraft itself, demanding tightly coupled attitude control and force-limiting algorithms. We break down the physics of free-flying reaction dynamics and explain how the RSGS payload plans to manage force control and attitude stabilization without a fixed ground to stand on.
