History is more complex than many online discussions suggest. Yes, the transatlantic slave trade was a horrific, race-based system with lasting consequences. But slavery and forced labor also existed in Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas long before that. Many groups—including Chinese immigrants and Japanese Americans—also faced severe discrimination in U.S. history. The abolition of slavery, the end of segregation, and civil rights protections expanded opportunities for everyone. The lesson isn't to compare suffering or dismiss anyone's history. It's to recognize that understanding the full historical context—and building on equal opportunity—is more productive than reducing history to a single narrative.
