As a teen I watched my best friends parents disagree once…and nothing happened. The vibe didn’t change, no one left the room, their kids didn’t go quiet, no one got snippy. It was fucking WILD. That was when I knew something went wrong at my factory.

Went to sleep at a friends house ins second grade and cried bc her parents were so nice, fed us dinner and laughed and then before bed they all hugged and said goodnight and they loved each other. We stayed up late bc I was asking her so many questions. Like do that every night? Why do they hug so much? How does she have such a cool older brother. Then I asked her if he ever did any of the cruel things my brother did to me. And she answered all of my questions. It was so eye opening. I have craved that connection to people since then. But sadly I wasn’t allowed to spend the night there again. I think her parents seen something or I made a comment in front of them and they didn’t want me coming around anymore.

A girl I went to HS with posted about her weekend on fb and her dad commented “we had so much fun with you guys this weekend, love you!” And I thought OMG HOW WEIRD and then I thought ‘….nope…nope…. I’m the problem here’

When I first met my FIL, he was watching a dating show with his 15 yo daughter and i was so creeped out. It was my 15 yo SIL’s favorite show and my FIL just wanted to be part of her life. I get it cognitively but emotionally I’m still like “ew.”

When I started middle school I was suddenly hearing my friends talk to their parents on the phone sometimes and I discovered that they all said “love you” at the end of their calls, which I thought was weird.

Seeing my 20 y/o boyfriend and his brother call their parents from across the house to show them a fart sound with their hands. AND THEY LAUGHED. They weren't mad that it was a waste of their time, or sigh and say "yeah cool". They actually enjoyed that their sons wanted to show them something, regardless of how dumb it was. (I married that hand fart guy btw. He's a gem)

My Dad was beat unconscious on the regular as a child & his Dad never told him he loved him. My Dad had his own flaws, as you'd imagine from that upbringing, but he hugged us, & told us he loved us every day. These comments are making me want to give y'all a hug & tell yo, I love you & I'm proud of you.

It took my husband a really long time to get used to the fact that my family hugs good bye every time and we say I love you to each other. He did not grow up in a home that showed emotions at all. It made me really sad for him, still does when I look at our kids and how affectionate we are and then I think about little him and no one ever giving him hugs and kisses and telling him they love him throughout the day. 🥺

when I met my sister in laws family (my brothers wife) and they all talked about how much they loved her and were proud of her accomplishments and they were aware of what was going on in her life - that's when I started looking at my family through a different lense

I was always surprised and jealous when people talked about how kind and loving their grandmas were. My grandma is very abusive and I’ve always had to walk on egg shells around my grandma and she’s never really been someone I want to spend time with. It bummed me out that there are grandmas who love and I never got that experience
