Look up atonement - the sin of the people used to be atoned by the sacrifice of the lamb aka the Israelites. Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Man cannot pay his sin debt because man has nothing to offer a just God in exchange for forgiveness. God is just and The Justifier. He took our place as the perfect (sinless) sacrifice for sinful man because He is just and loves us.
