In our darkest moments of loss, illness, or heartbreak, our eyes naturally drift toward the void…the position we didn’t get, the health that deteriorated, or the relationship that ended. We fixate on the missing half of the glass until the bitterness of what was taken obscures the sweetness of everything that remains. In this timeless wisdom, Shaykh Sha’rawi ra reminds us of the legendary scholar Urwah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). When severe gangrene forced doctors to amputate his leg without anaesthesia…so he would not lose consciousness of Allah for even a second…he held his severed limb and prayed: “O Allah, if You have tested me in one limb, You have granted health to the rest of my limbs!” SubhanAllah. Look at that perspective! He did not mourn the one leg he lost; he praised Allah for the arms, the eyes, the heart, and the remaining leg he still possessed. Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ described this resilient spirit perfectly: “Wondrous is the affair of the believer, for there is good for him in every matter, and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If he experiences ease, he gives thanks and that is good for him; and if he experiences hardship, he endures with patience and that is good for him.” (Sahih Muslim 2999) Whatever trial you are carrying today, stop staring at the empty space. Shift your gaze to the hundreds of undetected mercies keeping you alive, guided, and sustained right now. When you change your perspective from loss to gratitude, your hardship transforms into a doorway to Divine closeness. Focus on what remains.
