If you voted for Trump, you cannot be a good therapist (and should not be one). Also, a lot of ethics within therapy are rooted in white supremacy.

DBT IS DBT! some therapist can't afford the 50 billion dollars to do the Marsha Linehan training but that doesn't mean they dont know what they are doing

The therapeutic relationship is the greatest predictor of success in therapy. That’s a hill. I will die on as a 14 year trauma therapist.

A 2 year masters program is no where near enough training to start diagnosing and treating mental health conditions

You can't expect emotional regulation from a child if the adults around them aren't modeling it.

Many therapists would benefit from non-therapy social service experience, outside of practicums. I’m talking 2-5 years.

Therapy should be free, but instead they only care about your mental health if they get paid.

Having a therapist with similar lived experiences almost always improves the therapeutic relationship, and self-disclosure isn’t always a bad thing

respectful edit to your hill? trauma informed is not the same as trauma trained/certified and I think that's needed because yeah you can know things stem from trauma but if you don't know what to do with that who are you helping? my hill i suppose. (my masters is in trauma counseling)

In the same vein - therapy modality “creators” charging thousands for basic bare bones training of those models are perpetuating the mental health accessibility gaps.

Most therapist/ mental health professionals are not adequately trained to recognize when a client/ patient is in an abusive relationship and it is a negligent oversight in how therapists/ mental health professionals are trained.

You should not be opening a private practice the second you become licensed or as a baby therapist. And everyone should work in community mental health before doing so.

Just because you know the textbook definition of a disorder, doesn’t mean you’re the best person to treat it. Becoming a therapist doesn’t make you an expert in every disorder. It’s important to find your niche and stay within your scope.

deep breathing/meditation and stretching exercises are not universal and don't work for every individual who struggles with regulation. therapists need to tap in to other sensory methods that actually focus on what works best for the client. sincerely – a client who is tired of being told "let's stretch and take deep breaths".

Theory really does matter in this job. Something changed in the programs in the last 10 years that so many programs stopped teaching theory and now we have up-and-coming therapists who don’t know what theory to work from or what theory they want to work from. Theory and therapies are not the same thing.

Therapists, just like people from any other field, can be very condescending and arrogant. Therapist snobbery is a real thing. Most comment sections on therapy TT are proof. It’s annoying and disheartening.

Not entirely in the post prompt BUT I think it’s relevant. Life coaches doing ANYTHING that remotely resembles or falls under ANYTHING therapy should be ILLEGAL.
