If anyone is curious: When mixed with water (typically a 1-to-9 or 1-to-10 ratio), the mild organic and citric acids and chelating compounds in molasses bind to the iron oxide (rust) molecules. This breaks the rust loose, lifts it off the good metal, and holds it in suspension in the liquid, leaving bare, clean iron or steel behind.
