While spending time with friends near the top of the falls, he slipped on the wet rocks and fell into the water below, where the powerful current pulled him under. The area is known for its slippery terrain and dangerous conditions near the cliff edges. His GoPro was not recovered until two years later, and the camera still contained footage from that day. The video shows Richard laughing and enjoying the outing with his friends, capturing what appeared to be an ordinary moment only minutes before the tragic accident.
