On February 26, 1972, the Buffalo Creek disaster devastated communities in West Virginia after a coal waste dam collapsed following heavy rainfall. Millions of gallons of water, coal slurry, and debris surged through the narrow valley, overwhelming towns within minutes and destroying homes, schools, and businesses. Many residents had almost no time to escape the fast-moving flood. The disaster killed 125 people, injured more than 1,000 others, and left around 4,000 residents without homes. Investigations later found that poor engineering, inadequate maintenance, and major safety failures contributed to the dam’s collapse.
