in Tibetan Buddhism, there's a belief in something called a tulpa, which is essentially a spirit that is even life through the concentrated amalgam of emotions emitted by a collective group of people meditating on the same thing. At this point, I weirdly believe that each of the LI's possess their own minor spirits, as all true works of art do. This is why each of us has such a strong emotional pull to them. Even if it's not a living, breathing spirit, I don't like any of us would feel the way we do if they were JUST pixels on a screen.
