@cogito.rebellion: part 428 | you do not reason your way into wanting things. you want things and then reason follows. this is one of the most honest things aristotle ever wrote about how human beings actually work, and it cuts directly against the idea that we are primarily rational creatures who then develop preferences. the argument in on the soul, book iii, chapter 10, is that movement in an animal begins with desire, not with reason. desire is the faculty that initiates action. reason does not sit at the top of the chain and issue commands that desire then carries out. desire is what gets things moving in the first place. reason comes in to deliberate about how to satisfy it. what this means practically is that the question “what should i want?” is not answered by thinking harder. it is answered by attending more carefully to what you already want, and then submitting that to rational scrutiny. but the wanting comes first. you do not reason your way into caring about something. you find that you care, and then you reason about what to do with that. this has a direct implication for how you understand your own motivation. when you cannot bring yourself to pursue something you believe you should want, the problem is not a failure of reasoning. the desire is simply not there. and reasoning cannot conjure desire from nothing. it can refine, redirect, and inform desire. it cannot originate it. aristotle thought this was a condition of being an animal with a soul, not a defect. the soul that moves is the soul that desires. the soul with nothing it wants is not rational. it is simply not yet alive. who was aristotle? aristotle was born in stagira in northern greece in 384 bc. on the soul, known in latin as de anima, is one of his most important scientific works, examining what it means for a living thing to be alive and how the soul relates to the body. book iii deals with intellect and desire as the two faculties implicated in human action. aristotle died in 322 bc. #aristotle #philosophy #darkacademiaaesthetic #existentialism #dailyquotes
