Yup, it’s totally fine when readers and book influencers are publicly negative about books. That’s their right. What I don’t like is when authors do it to other authors because then there’s a professional line that they’re crossing—AND I think that’s exactly why there are a LOT of booktok influencers who only talk positivity, because they want to keep their options open for future opportunities with those authors/publisher or maybe get published themselves one day. Like this idea of professionalism bleeds over into reader spaces, when it doesn’t need to, if that makes sense?

Ooh actually I a little bit disagree with some of this! Most books are not a love or hate for me—they’re somewhere in the middle. And I think saying something is objectively bad is misleading, because most of the time it’s subjectively bad. It didn’t work for you. But that doesn’t mean it’s indisputable fact that it’s bad. This doesn’t mean negative or critical reviews are bad (I think they’re very good and important!) but it is important to put thought into *why* a book didn’t work for you. *Why* is the writing bad? Is it the structure or pacing or style? Why didn’t a character work for you? Lack of growth? Flat or simplistic characterization? That’s the critical (in more ways than one) part imo. It’s just a TikTok and we all use a shorthand but being precise and thoughtful about language is kind of a thing for literary criticism.

I think the negative reviews are so helpful because it helps me determine if I would want to spend money on a book or not. Especially if we have similar tastes on why you think a book is good. Just saying it “wasn’t for me” is not helpful but saying “it had x y and z in it that I didn’t vibe with is because maybe I don’t like x y and z either and would have wasted money on a book I didn’t end up loving or would dnf. Love your content! ❤️

Negative reviews are for people like me. I’m a critical person, but necessarily a negative person, or not always negative. I don’t see negativity as bad either. But I often think differently than the majority and it can be isolating. I don’t follow fandoms. Also isolating but it’s not my nature. So critical reviews with negativity soothe me. They tell me others see what I see and interpret some parts of the world the same. I love critical/neg reviews even if I liked a book/movie. Because I’m still going to like it! I like seeing how others interpret it. Please keep posting those inflammatory reviews!

I believe that negative reviews are just as important as positive reviews. The reason why you hate the book might be why I like the book. Also if every single review is positive and has no depth or anything that anyone can say even slightly negative about a book it gives red flag. There is absolutely nothing on this planet that everyone 100% agree with 100%.
