Gov Murphy signed NJ into RGGI , regional greenhouse, gas initiative. While doing that closed several nuclear power plants that created electricity for the state of New Jersey. New Jersey used to be an exporter of energy to other states. Now we don’t create enough of our own, so we’re importing energy from other states which is a lot of of our electric bill. It’s under electric delivery.

It’s very complex, but the biggest thing is New Jersey needs more generation (Solar, wind, storage and or natural gas) as well as distribution (regional power lines and local grids). there are regulatory issues and the governor is doing good work to dig into those. The other thing is your bill doesn’t just go to power, it also subsidizes power for poor people which is something New Jersey can end if it wanted to. Not an easy decision. Overall, anyone who just blames greed or profit or data centers is looking for an easy answer.

It’s a state policy issue they went all in on solar and wind and cancelled plans for new power plants. The problem is it was never ready and now the federal government canceled a lot of them so they started bringing in power from other states as far as Kentucky

As much as it’s the data centers, keep in mind as prices go up on everything, people who own private power generation will also raise their rate that they sell to utility companies to cover their increased costs

The regional grid operators needs to approve more generator projects. Supply is not meeting demand.

Solar and batteries. I think NJ has some community solar systems that can reduce rates but I haven't looked into it too much

hell if i know but my bill has doubled over the past 4 years, and keeps going up even with the “equal payment plan.” it’s ridiculous, i know people with rent that is close to my electric bill

a few things could be done 1) undo the privatization of the Electrical companies, make it state owned and operated instead. 2) disallow companies from making deals to subsidize data center and other operations by pushing it onto others 3) charge differently between residential, commercial, and industrial zoning. residents don't have the money that industry does, they can foot a bit more of the bill
