The idea of pet the dog is worldbuilding and attention to detail, but then this became a rule instead of an example, and it became a gimmick

People really do make their entire reason for getting a game based on whether you can pet a dog or cat in the game

I think, in a vacuum, being able to pet the dog is a positive in video games. However, so many gaming journalists and let's players will play the game and act like petting dogs is a major feature instead of a tiny quirk. I would rather play a game in which you can't pet the dog over a game in which 80% of the marketing and content goes crazy over one tiny mechanic

I think a big part of that was because there was a “can you pet the dog” Twitter account that always tweeted “you can pet the _ in _ game” not because the game itself was marketing the game based on it

I think being able to pet a dog in a video game used to be a litmus test to see if the video game was well detailed but now it’s kind of just a meaningless selling point.

Petting a dog is an easy action to add that makes a world feel lived in, I don’t think a game is worse for not being able to pet a dog, but it is better. When I see a dog in real life the first thing I want to do is pet that dog, it’s the same in games, and when I can, I feel more immersed

In my opinion, this is a horrible take. Taken to its extremes, we would remove all non-functional mechanics in games, which means cosmetics, npc commentary, etc. Implementing animal petting is a) part of making the world feel real and b) incredibly easy to implement. There’s no drawback and arguing that it’s cringe is giving weird Gen Z non-chalant behavior

it's also always the same 3 kinds of dogs that are always medium size, like let me pet a pomeranian or a great Dane or a bulldog or something

I’m a fan that palworld lets you interact with every pal with an animation for each to convey emotion. I hate that marketing is “you can pet dog” but I enjoy when it exists.

Yes, petting the dog shouldn’t be marketed. It should be a nice addition to the game. You like the game, you get the game, oh you can pet the dog in game. They also should play more of a role and so should other animals. I would 100% do quests just to pet a cat. Or a skunk or a possum

"Petting the dog" is a signifier to small detail present in a game. It's not a perfect 1:1, but it does key into the level of detail and care put into the incidental and less visible parts of the game. It's the difference between bodies filling a space, and a town that feels alive. And on its base level, it is a small psychological reward for players who do more than critical path in video games. It's important and necessary.

I don't think this has ever been a thing I've seen marketed as a big feature. I know there are people who talk about it or note it online or in reviews as a joke or a meme, and I know there's a website that documents whether you can or not, but I can't recall a game using it in its marketing or in an advertisement.

botw and totk still bother me. i want to pet those dogs. and they have specific affection quirks so it makes no sense to NOT let me pet the dog. i don’t care if you think it’s this that or the other thing. it’s like my grandma not liking video games because you kill things. it’s much more nuanced than that

I like the mechanic, but its so obviously pandering to market your game based on if you can or not. Like the guy in the video said, it doesn't meaningfully affect your game. Advertise it on meaningful features!
