Iran and Oman are reportedly nearing an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz that could allow both countries to collect “service fees” from ships passing through one of the world’s most important international waterways. Iran does not get to attack shipping, help close the Strait, hold the global economy hostage, and then get rewarded with a revenue stream for reopening it. The United States has already rejected Iran’s claim that it will control routes or collect fees, and that needs to remain a hard line. The Strait of Hormuz should be open, unrestricted, and toll-free. Iran should not profit from a crisis it helped create.
