Colorism was more of an issue with the sororities than with fraternities given how ideas of beauty shaped women’s organizations than men’s.

This is in the memoirs of ΚΑΨ founder Byron K. Armstrong as well, who along with another Kappa founder Elder Watson Diggs (Friend of Ernest Just) who at the time were students at Howard before transferring to Indiana University.

long story short, they wanted the light skinned college men and would deny the darker skin men. the founders said as friends we're a package deal. that was the catalyst for the organization's founding on friendship bonds as opposed to colorism/achievement/status etc.

That speech was given in 1941 by the most Hon. Bro. E.A. Love. Bruhz that are thorough know exactly where to find this info. Alpha approached 3 of the founders in 1908 about joining. Our founders gathered research and information for over two years before the birth of Omega.

Let’s be clear. Bishop Love stated that they didn’t want to be part of a caste. That Alpha invited Love and Cooper but didn’t look in the direction of Coleman, of which was the most decorated. The members of Alpha Phi Alpha didn’t display the kind of brotherhood in which they believed a fraternity should display. They felt that Alpha’s were chose based on their social status and not friendship. Members have spoken on the brown paper bag test, Love didn’t say that directly.

Even if it was during the Tap Day of 1908, inviting someone to submit an application isn’t the same as inviting someone to the Organization.

As a young Bro. who has done some research as well as talked to members of Omega on the topic. I personally think one of the biggest things in this conversation is semantics. Was it out right rejection or a silent choice to not pursue. The semantics matter and have played a big role in how this story is viewed.

A group of men didn’t like what they saw and decided to start their own thing. Why is this an issue?

I have no doubt colorism was a problem back then however i hate that the stigma gets attached when there are pics of the founders and early members that show dark skinned members.

I have to disagree about students that attended Howard were well off. Some of the students were on scholarship and might have been getting help from the community as well. There are several accounts of students being first in there family or there community to attend Howard.

It wasn't just about color but financial status as well. Our founders didn't want to limit men based on social, financial and color status.

If the honorable men of Omega decided to reject an opportunity from us-leading to the birth of Omega Psi Phi, I pay homage to them. We are all members of our respective organizations because the visionaries who established these orgs aligned their efforts with what they saw as their PURPOSE for fraternity. I think it’s great for historical insight and general knowledge but the GREATER takeaway is that each of the D9 has its own mission that speaks to those who sense alignment with that unique approach to service & fellowship. It’s ALL GOOD.

Only reason they didn’t look at color was if you your family had money or was elite

Seems as though Tap day was the initial slight & it continued the grow. The speech feels like there is animosity.

I think this is a thought 💭 provoking question. There is a great deal of intersectionality between Greek organizations. We have to put ourselves in that timeframe and mindset. As with any historical claims, I feel context is important. We can agree colorism has been part of Greek culture. Unfortunately we aren’t privy to those conversations. We can only extrapolate from information many years after the fact.

My chapter was chartered in 1925. Full of dark skin brothers like myself. Elitism and classism will always be a discussion when talking about black people in college in general, let alone D9.

I did research and think it's true. Occurred during tap day but they said no. The true reason from rejection is debateable.
