@defendcroatia: The military and police operation Storm , conducted in early August 1995, was the pivotal and largest liberation operation undertaken by the Croatian Army and the Special Police of the Republic of Croatia; it resulted in the collapse of the "Republika Srpska Krajina" para-state and the liberation of one-quarter of the Croatian territory that had been under occupation until then. Following years of unsuccessful negotiations and the rejection of peace plans by the rebel leadership in Knin, the Croatian state leadership launched a massive offensive on August 4 along a front line stretching over 630 kilometers. The very next day, August 5, Croatian forces entered Knin and raised the national flag on the Knin Fortress—an act of decisive symbolic and psychological significance that is celebrated today as Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day. In just a few days, the operation led to the total collapse of the opposing forces' defenses, a link-up with the 5th Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the lifting of the siege of Bihać, thereby averting a humanitarian catastrophe in that enclave. The operation, which involved between 130,000 and 150,000 Croatian soldiers and police officers, claimed the lives of 242 Croatian defenders, while the period immediately preceding and during the offensive saw a mass exodus of more than 150,000 ethnic Serbs, organized by the Krajina authorities. #croatia #fyp
