It's called a zipper merge. I don't understand why people don't use the lanes. traffic would go much faster if everyone conducted the zipper merge.

I read somewhere that if you wanted people to merge then direct them into a single lane, you make them merge into the middle then direct them as needed with cones. Takes a lot more cones, but I think that would work better to force people to zipper merge

Only reason zipper merge just never works in america bc people have too much of an ego to let people in the front or take turns. Let go of that ego on the road and this amount of traffic wouldn’t exist in the first place.

A single file will always move faster than a zipper. That’s why most of us opt for the single file. Then the ones who want to zip bring the entire thing to a halt.

Notice how the traffic was moving at a decent pace through the chokepoint? Only time they had to brake was when other drivers tried to merge at the end. When a car brakes what happens to the cars behind them?

You're supposed to use all the lanes until the merging point. The point is set for a reason; if they wanted it half a mile up the road, they would have put the cones up there. The POV guy is 100% right. It's a proven fact, and there are stats backing it up.

I never have a problem with people using both lanes like you’re supposed to. I do have a problem with people that force their way in at the last second without using a blinker

I don’t mind you zipper merging, but don’t go all the way to the line and try to squeeze in right as the cones start to narrow that shit pisses me off and I’m not gonna move an inch from the guy’s bumper and you’re not gonna get in
