Look into GIS. Even if you don’t go full into it, so much of what you want to learn is in the back end of GIS (i.e SQL, Python, database management).

I also want to move into data engineering! Currently doing Python and SQL supporting an ERP system, but need to learn more advanced skills. Where are you planning to learn the pieces in your roadmap?

Just throwing it out there there’s a school called WGU. It’s completely self paced and they charge u for 6 month term. You could easily get a bachelors from there in 6months -1yr.

Best of luck, man! I’m a data engineer myself, and the job is basically learning something new every single day. Python and Spark are going to be your best friends, and knowing how to build custom, scalable frameworks is what actually gets you hired. One piece of advice: at the end of the day, our job is to build robust platforms that safely onboard data, ensuring people can trust that their data gets exactly where it needs to go.

Didn’t go to college, went from data analyst to network engineer to software engineer to forward deployed AI engineer, want to know the secret? Learn to code, if you can solve things at scale, you are valuable in many roles. Actual code, not your companies legacy Perl scripts they don’t want to pay anyone to build properly and dump on you, minimally Python and some web. Critically, you need to know how to use an AI harness, no major company that does data engineering or software dev and doesn’t use AI right now, it’s not a crutch not to learn, but do not fall behind or your skills you are getting will not get you anywhere when they interview you and find out the skills are new and you don’t know how to leverage AI. Good luck.

firefighter old career into, Project coordinator for construction. Into data analyst after classes online, into cost accountant, now FP&A analyst… no official college degree. Classes and experience in the job. All under 5 years for full growth. Anything is possible if the company you’re with supports growth and sees value. Otherwise there is a plateau of growth and only seen as a people pleasing person or “hey can you do this and we can see how it works out?” And nothing will come out of it, except results you provide. I think it’s time to look brother. Honestly.

I haven’t been able to even land an entry level interview for data analytics, so I pivoted. My local tech college offers a software development program that I can transfer credits to the local university and I’ll be half way to my associates. Plus learn some new skills.
