Oikawa is one of the deepest written characters because he represents the painful reality that not everyone is born equally talented He worked harder than almost anyone yet he was always surrounded by geniuses like Kageyama and Ushijima His quote Talent is something you make bloom Instinct is something you polish shows that talent must be developed but also that some people are simply born with gifts others don’t have Oikawa teaches that hard work can take you far but it can’t always overcome natural talent and that’s what makes his story so heartbreaking and realistic

The famous quote from Haikyu's Oikawa Tooru "Talent is something you make bloom. Instinct is something you polish" is often misunderstood by fans. At first, even I thought it didnt make sense at all. Oikawa's whole character is based on "hard work beats natural talent," so by saying you make talent bloom," it initially sounds like he's admitting you actually do need to have a seed of talent in the first place. However, I realized over the years that that isn"t the point he was trying to make. By saying talent is something you make bloom, he's basically saying the real battle against natural geniuses like Kageyama or Ushiwaka comes down to pure grit. Sure, someone like Tobio had talent right from the start because his seed was planted right on the surface of the soil. However, Toru is saying that while there are people like Tobio, there are others who have their seed planted way down deep in the dirt. Without constant watering like hard work) those people would never even discover that they have the same or even better talent. This just means he's rejecting his old "you're either born with it or you're not" way of thinking. He finally realizes that his own 'seed' of talent was just buried incredibly deep, and that was okay too. So whats the takeaway? Basically, Okawa is taking responsibility. It's so easy to just say, "Wow I dont have Ushiwaka's natural strength or Kageyama's genius instinct so im js gonna give up." But by declaring that his talent is something he himself has to make bloom and polish, he is refusing to give himself a stupid excuse to quit something he loves.
