As a RN of 26 years, I always tell people I am training that you chart your ass off and with the thought that you may have to go to court one day. If you don't chart it, then it didn't happen. A good nurse will look at EVERYTHING-a GREAT nurse will chart it!!!!!

That’s cause they always tell us in nursing school to always chart as if you were to go on trial, and it’s true. It’s not until it happens that you’re like holy shit thank god I listen took that advice because it could save your life .

I have a condition called myasthenia gravis when I had my first child during my C-section I went into something called myasthenic crisis basically your entire body gives out on you. You can’t move and you can’t breathe. They put me on a ventilator. I told them I still felt like I couldn’t breathe the doctor told me I was imagining it that there’s no reason why I should feel like I can’t breathe on a ventilator. I told the nurse through writing a note. I wasn’t getting any air. She asked my husband how long I felt that way he said for two days. She ordered a chest x-ray. My left lung was almost completely filled with fluid. I basically had a collapsed lung. If she had not ordered a chest x-ray, I probably would be dead. I owe my life to that nurse.

My husband was in a motorcycle accident. Broken back, two broken wrists and a broken collar bone. Doctor wanted to release him that same day. The nurse looked at my husband’s vitals and saw something wasn’t right. She told the doctor. Doctor came back and huffed that if he was going to stay he needed to be transferred to another hospital. He got the transfer. That hospital ran more test and his lungs were riddled with pulmonary embolisms. She saved his life.
