@goatcult.media: On the night of January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia was sailing near the Italian island of Giglio with more than 4,200 passengers and crew aboard when it sailed dangerously close to shore and struck an underwater rock formation. The impact tore a massive opening in the hull, allowing seawater to flood the ship as it began listing heavily to one side. Passengers initially received confusing information about what was happening, and the order to abandon ship didn’t come until more than an hour after the collision. As the vessel continued tilting, lifeboats became difficult to launch and some people were forced to climb along the ship or jump into the water. Captain Francesco Schettino later faced intense criticism after leaving the vessel while passengers were still aboard. He was eventually convicted of multiple offenses connected to the disaster and sentenced to 16 years in prison. The official death toll was 32 people. A salvage diver later died during work on the wreck, which is why some accounts refer to 33 deaths connected to the disaster. Do you think the disaster would have ended differently if the evacuation had started immediately?
