On December 27, 2009, the 22-year-old graduate student was jogging around Lake Hodges in San Diego County when a stranger tackled her from behind The man was John Albert Gardner III, then 30 years old. He pinned her to the ground and demanded money, but Moncayo believed she was about to be raped. She fought back. Moncayo later told investigators she sat up and struck Gardner in the nose with her elbow, a blow so forceful she felt his cartilage crack beneath the impact.The strike bought her the seconds she needed. She broke free and escaped, then called police immediately. San Diego police initially classified the case as an attempted robbery, not an attempted rape. That decision would later come under intense scrutiny, as it meant a more limited public warning went out about a predator loose in a popular park. Two months later, in February 2010, 17-year-old Chelsea King disappeared while jogging near the very same park. Her body was found five days later, buried in a shallow grave. Police soon connected Gardner's DNA to the crime through discarded clothing. He was arrested on February 28, 2010, just three days after King vanished.
