@monieelyse: Calling people out has never come naturally to me. I usually worry about hurting someone’s feelings, especially when I know their intentions may have been good. But when I read comments like this, I try to take myself out of the equation for a minute. I imagine this being said to someone I love… or to one of the many people in this community who are quietly fighting their own eating disorder. If someone said these words to them, I would hope someone would gently explain why they can be so harmful. That perspective gives me the courage to speak up. This video isn’t about shaming the person who left the comment. They may have really been trying to help. But sometimes the most supportive thing we can offer someone in recovery isn’t more fear..it’s more hope, compassion, and a reminder that they’re worth fighting for. For those of you who stayed for this entire conversation, thank you. 🩵 #recovery #recoveryispossible #recoveryisworthit #recoveryisbeautiful

I knew it was Rachel also as soon as I read it. i dont thinknthe person is trying to be horrible I think theres a real fear that if things dont change time will run out and people dont want that for you. I dont knoe hat help you have access too but some stuff youve mentioned is terrible advice if it comes from professionals (eg refeeding will happen beyond 15-20cals) its avtuqlly very dangerous advice to others doing it wothout help even though you didnt mean it as advice for others. its very confusing where this terrible advice (given to you) is coming from) but i think most people just care & want to see you well, plus ypu likely have a higher autistic audience (incl me) who want to see you thrive but the fact your getting told scarily wrong info like that is concerning

I'm like you. I never respond to "tough love". I just rebel against it and dig in further!!!

Honestly, tough love or even fear doesn’t help the situation in most cases. It actually makes it worse and makes the affected person not feel safe to seek out help again. I’m like that, tough love and fear doesn’t help me.

Hello beautiful young woman. I used to be a Marriage and Family Therapist. I’ve had some experience both professionally and personally with eating disorders. I also agree tough love is not aways the answer. That’s my position with alcoholism and other addictions too. It’s important for you and others struggling to feel loved no matter what and unconditionally. When I read a book on anorexia one of the things that stood in my mind is the suggestion to put photos of yourself as a child and young girl in a frame and out in the open. Ask yourself what that little girl wanted for herself. What goals did she have? And what steps it would take to get there. It entails HOPE for the future and HOPE for health. Today is the first day your page came across my FYP so I just browsed your page and looked at a few of your videos. One of the questions I think is important to ask a person with an addiction/eating disorder is, “What do YOU think it would take to get better?” What do you want to LIVE for and be here for? When I’ve counseled people with su*icidal ideations the answer is usually their children or something very personal. Maybe the idea of getting married or an occupation you’d love if your body was a little more healthy. I know eating disorders and body dysmorphia are so difficult to treat. With eating disorders the complex issue is we have to eat. With other addictions the substance can be removed and then the person needs to sustain the absence of the substance . With eating issues we have to eat so it makes it difficult. I see you’re in treatment and posting it. That is so wonderful. I’m sure you’re inspiring many people. I wish you well, healthy, recovery, and a beautiful life. ❤️💖🫂🤗🙏

Thank you. I'm a mental health therapist. I don't specialize in eating disorders, but sometimes work with clients who might be developing an ED or who are far along enough in recovery that they are focusing on other things, even with some risk of relapse. I've learned more from you than I have from many of the books and courses I've taken. Your personal narrative has given much such an impactful education and helped me understand what some of my clients haven't been able to say (everyone, of course, is unique in their process). Much appreciation and best in your journey; I am deeply moved by your intelligence, warmth, thoughtfulness, and dedication.

Sweetie ,I completely understand. I’ve been in a horrible place in the past with Anorexia Nervosa. It was so hard and I understand when people make these comments ,it doesn’t help. I’m praying for you sweetie. God has healed me. I still don’t eat sugar which came from my ED . But that isn’t a bad thing. Lots of love and prayers 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻You’ve got this my dear!!

Tough love does not really work when you're already at a very fragile state. If anything it can seriously backfire. The many times my family or even some friends have given me tough love, it made me quieter, and sometimes even half progress. Because I would just feel doing all this is pointless if the outcome is going to be negative anyway. I think people want to mean well but sometimes delivery of a message is as important as the intention itself.
