Creating a cut flower garden 🌻 🌷 Here are the steps I’ve taken to create the beds for my new cut flower garden! 🌱 Cut away the grass. I cut the grass away using a spade to slice turf into manageable chunks, and then slice underneath the turf to scalp off the grass roots and all. I’m doing this because I have high weed pressure in the area where I’m creating this garden. I have a lot of couch grass, creeping buttercup, dandelions and mares tail, all of which are tenacious weeds which I find punch their way through cardboard layers. If you’re growing in an area where the weeds aren’t so prolific, you can skip ahead to the cardboard phase. Note I am a huge advocate for limiting soil disturbance, but I find this is the best way to control weeds. Other than this, I don’t dig my soil or disturb it at all to protect the soil life below. The turf is piled up and will rot down into a nice compost over the next few months. 🌱 I then put a layer of cardboard down to help supress the weeds - obviously I’ve cut the grass up but the cardboard will help to supress any weed seeds that have been unearthed and any chunks of root behind that might continue to grow. If you’re laying directly onto grass the cardboard will kill the grass by eliminating light. Two layers of cardboard might be a good idea too if you have enough! 🌱 Add a thick layer of conpost, 2-4 inches, to create your beds. You can plant in this right away. 🌱 Always make sure you have paths surrounding your beds to help prevent weeds from creeping inwards.
