@machsquawk: THE F 47 JUST GOT A MAJOR UPDATE BUT IT IS NOT ALL GOOD NEWS! ✈️🚨 The U.S. Air Force is facing a serious timeline mismatch between its brand new sixth generation fighter and the engine built to power it! Pentagon officials just confirmed at the Life Cycle Industry Days conference in Ohio that the F 47 stealth fighter is still on track for its first flight in 2028. However, the revolutionary Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion engine will not be ready to integrate onto an aircraft until 2030 at the absolute earliest! That creates a massive problem for the Air Force. The adaptive engine being developed by GE and Pratt and Whitney is designed to dynamically change its internal airflow in mid flight. It gives the jet 25 percent better fuel efficiency, insane top end thrust, and the massive electrical power required for high tech lasers and advanced sensors. That range boost is the exact key to fighting across the massive distances of the Pacific! Because of budget delays, the engine program is out of sync with the airframe by at least two full years. To get the F 47 off the ground in 2028, Boeing will have to fly initial prototypes using interim surrogate engines, likely modified versions of current powerplants like the F135 or F119.
