Conservatives killed our elderly family members. Elderly Americans living in conservative states died at a 43% to 95% higher excess rate post-vaccine rollout than seniors in liberal states who followed public health recommendations and achieved higher vaccination coverage. Public health policies and vaccine uptake directly drove this mortality gap: as conservative leadership prohibited prolonged shutdowns, banned mask mandates, and rejected non-pharmaceutical interventions, liberal states maintained public health measures longer and prioritized widespread immunization. This divergence resulted in a massive, quantifiable excess death toll concentrated among older adults. Academic analyses from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and JAMA Internal Medicine—evaluating cohorts with a median age of 78—found that after vaccines became universally available, the excess death rate gap between registered Republicans and Democrats expanded by 153%, leaving registered Republicans with nearly double the excess mortality rate of their Democratic counterparts. These excess deaths were predominantly concentrated in red counties with low overall vaccination rates, illustrating how state policy and political resistance to vaccination directly translated into a significantly higher fatal outcome for elderly conservative residents.
