Solia is correct for USED TO, but we tend to speak like the example you gave, i mean, we don’t include it too much when we speak in Spanish.

Solía vivir sounds horribly wrong and mistranslated. Solía is chiefly used for actions that imply a certain movement or activity, albeit with a few exceptions.

Using “soler” in the past imperfect is not incorrect or uncommon in Spanish. It can sound more narrative or intense but it’s used. The important thing to understand is that in Spanish we don’t use it the same way as the “used to…” in English.

mi papá siempre decía "los perfumes finos suelen venir en frascos pequeños al igual que el veneno", la palabra soler al igual que otras no muy comunes, debían ser usadas en nuestro vocabulario de una manera constante para enriquecer nuestro vocabulario.
