Responsible Travel 🤲🏽 What are your thoughts? 💭 Thank you to the country of @godomrep for wanting to highlight not just Tourism, but Responsible Travel. Something I feel should be discussed much more, as over 1.5 billion (and increasing) people engage as international tourists every year. We had such a beautiful time driving through the country, enjoying organic grown coffee in the mountains and getting connected with the locality. How we move about a foreign country has a massive impact on its local people, environment & the future direction of tourism as an industry. Most of my international travel is for work & for meaningful purposeful experiences. Ones that are rooted in hands-on learning, advancing a skill set and ones inspire our land project here in Texas. Before traveling; I do a deep dive, ensuring my time in a foreign country considers everyone who calls it home. Here are some of my considerations: • Research prior - what is the history of where we’re going? What is currently happening? • Learn the language, even a little! • Know the exchange rate & living wage of where you’re visiting - considering this when leaving gratuity, shopping locally • Learn what the country cultivates well, its artisan goods • Plan enriching learning experiences run by locals themselves • Buy from local communities directly, investing into their systems • See the country through the locals eyes, make some friends • Connect with indigenous communities • Honor the space and leave no trace • Be aware of water & energy consumption • Try new things • Sustainable accommodations • If we need specific clothes for a trip, we thrift first - vacations fuel fast fashion purchases • Seeing animals wild in their protected natural setting or through an accredited sanctuary. A picture isn’t worth their suffering. • Considering body care products, their effect on waterways and aquatic life • And of-course be safe There is a world of information online for this topic, specific to countries you may be visiting. I hope this helps! #responsibletravel #tastethedominicanrepublic #drhasitall #tastetheparadise
